3 Principles of Product Halal Certification

Currently, products that are presented in the market are processed in such a way as to become products that are easy to consume. In addition, the appearance of the product is also designed to arouse consumer tastes, staying fresh with the desired colour, flavour, taste, and texture.

Technology interference and the complexity of materials are inevitable. It is necessary to have a halal fatwa through a halal certification process to clarify the legal status of halal and haram products that are still syubhat.

This was conveyed by Deputy Director of LPPOM MUI, Ir. Muti Arintawati, M.Si. in the webinar Building Consumer Trust with Halal Certification as Readiness to Enter Market 4.0 held by Belanjaukm.com some time ago.

“It is undeniable that today’s products are inseparable from technological interference, making it difficult to identify their halal-ness. Therefore, a third party is needed to ensure that products can be guaranteed halal. LPPOM MUI is here to fulfill this, “he said.

Mainly, there are three principles in the halal certification of products. First, halal certification ensures that all materials used in the production process meet halal requirements.

Second, halal certification ensures that products are not contaminated with haram/najis materials, whether they come from production equipment, workers, or the production environment.

“This second principle is important to pay attention to. Because even though all the ingredients are halal, it turns out that they use equipment that is shared with non-halal products, there is a possibility that the material is contaminated with najis or non-halal materials, even if, it’s invisible to the eye, “said Muti.

She further explained that the contamination could come from employees, especially when a businessmen employs a non-Muslim. It is possible for workers to handle non-halal materials before processing the product.

Third, halal certification ensures that the halal production process can run continuously. To make it happen, LPPOM MUI has a Halal Assurance System (HAS) to regulate materials, production processes, products, human resources, and procedures according to the requirements of LPPOM MUI.

“Do not let the halal product only when audited to get a halal certificate. Companies are required to implement HAS properly so that their halal products can be maintained. Once they get a halal certificate, businessmen have an obligation to maintain their halal certification process, ”explained Muti. (YN)
