The Importance of Maintaining a Halal Lifestyle during Pandemic

How is the halal lifestyle in the middle of pandemic? Can it be a reason to leave the halal lifestyle? In a webminar “Talks About Halal” couple times ago Nadia Lutfi Masduki, S.Psi., M.Si. as a Promotion and Education Manager LPPOM MUI, highlighted three things related to halal in the 2019 Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

First, halal is a mandatory. This is written in Al-Baqarah verse 168. “O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth (that is) lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan; Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”

According to Nadia, pandemic is not a reason to not consuming halal products. This is because there are many alternative MUI Certified food and beverages available on the market.

“During this pandemic, can we say it is an emergency? Limitation of a condition is said to be emergency or not by while life threatening. If there is still a choice, then choose the halal,” said Nadia.

Socond, halal as a lifestyle. Means that everything is consumed, either eaten or worn, must include halal coridor. As well as the way to earn and the way to consume it.

Third, halal is the movement of kindness. Halal means free or unbounded by anything prohibited. Halal and haraam are divided into two, these are act and things or substance.

Act category is bounded to Islamic Act (Sharia), such as fard (mandatory), sunnah, and makruh (dissaproved). as an example, giving.

Meanwhile, object category is legal as long as there is no forbidden proposition. LPPOM MUI acts in the category of objects.

“LPPOM MUI conducts audit for every products. Do not let any forbidden ingredients mixed in a product. Actually, that is only a little are forbidden, but along with current technological advances it turns out that it can go into products consumed by us,” said Nadia.

As an example is pig. All parts of pig can be used as variety of products. Pig skin can be a purse and shoes. Its head skin is also used as gelatin, afterwards it goes into the foods and beverages, or even drugs.

At the present, Indonesian no longer need to worry. Many Indonesian products have been certified halal by MUI. Means that the products in terms of halal and thayyib are already guaranteed. This can be the choice of the people of Indonesia. (YN)
