  • Dog Meat Merchant's Decisive Action !

The people of Jakarta were shocked by the circulation of a video showing the presence of dog meat traders in Pasar Senen, Central Jakarta. This is certainly troubling to the consumer community. The practice of selling dog meat in Pasar Senen, Central Jakarta, went viral on social media after being uploaded by Animal Defenders Indonesia.

The video, which was uploaded to @animaldefendersindo's Instagram account, shows a stall selling dog meat. Dog meat sellers claim to be able to sell at least four dogs in a day.

However, two traders in Pasar Senen who were caught selling dog meat have received administrative sanctions from Perumda Pasar Jaya. Traders in the two stalls were sentenced to administrative sanctions, not the closure of the stalls. Perumda Pasar Jaya is now placing a banner urging all traders not to sell dog meat. "If anyone sells dog meat, they will be sanctioned according to the applicable regulations," reads the advisory posted on a number of corners of the Senen Market wall.

As reported by Kompas TV on Monday (13/9/2021), two stalls that were previously caught selling dog meat were observed to be empty. The two stalls are located at stalls 382 and 357 in Block 3 of Pasar Senen, Central Jakarta. Marketing Manager of Perumda Pasar Jaya Gatra Vaganza said, Pasar Jaya has sanctioned dog meat sellers operating in Pasar Senen. "We as management have made calls and carried out administrative sanctions," said Gatra in a video press release, Sunday (12/9/2021).

According to Gatra, the dog meat dealer was sanctioned not to repeat his deeds. If the trader returns to circulating dog meat, Gatra said he will take strict action in the form of a permanent closure. "What dog meat traders do is not in accordance with the regulations of Perumda Pasar Jaya. This is because dog meat is a commodity that should not be traded in the market owned by Perumda Pasar Jaya," said Gatra.

Executive Director of LPPOM MUI, Ir. Muti Arintawati, M.Si welcomed the action of regulating the dog meat trade by the manager of PD Pasar Jaya.

This is because, in addition to preventing the potential spread of diseases such as rabies, the regulation is also to protect Muslim consumers who are clearly forbidden to consume dog meat. "Crack down on disorganized traders," Muti said.

Based on a search conducted by Animal Defenders Indonesia, an animal lovers organization, dog meat circulating in Jakarta is sent from a number of areas in West Java, such as Sukabumi, Tasik, Garut, Pangandaran, Pelabuhan Ratu, Ciamis, where there are still many rabies cases found. Even though the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government claims that the area has been rabies-free since 2004. (FM)
