Step by step, the milestone of the journey was plugged by the Institute for the Study of Food, Medicines, and Cosmetics of the Indonesian Ulema Council (LPPOM MUI) in laying the foundation of halal certification in Indonesia starting from zero. Slowly but surely the awareness of Muslim consumers to choose halal certified products is increasing. This awareness is what encourages manufacturers to get halal certificates for their products voluntarily.
This was conveyed by the President Director of LPPOM MUI, Ir. Muti Arintawati, M.Si, at the 33rd Tasyakur Milad LPPOM MUI event on January 25, 2022. He said that this institution was founded by the MUI in 1989 to carry out the mandate of calming people in consuming halal products after in 1988 there was a crisis on the issue of lard.
"Armed only with the MUI Decree, strong determination and sincere intentions, LPPOM MUI was established on January 6, 2022, until this year it reached the age of 33. Over time, more and more parties have realized the importance of halal products, not only in the realm of fulfilling religious obligations for Muslim consumers, but have expanded to the economic and trade areas," explained Muti.
The state was also responsible by issuing the Halal Product Guarantee Law in 2014. Thus, the responsibility of LPPOM MUI is no longer only to carry out the MUI mandate to reassure the people and provide excellent service to companies receiving halal certification services, but also responsibility as a form of compliance with government regulations. LPPOM MUI collaborates with the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) as a state institution responsible for implementing the JPH Law by providing inputs based on the long experience of LPPOM MUI.
The Halal Assurance System (SJH) which has been launched by LPPOM since 2012 is the main reference for BPJPH in producing the Halal Product Guarantee System (SJPH). The positive list rules developed by LPPOM MUI are also a reference in the preparation of product rules that are not required to be halal certified. Thus, companies that have been implementing SJH for a long time have no difficulty meeting the new regulations.
"LPPOM MUI is also ready to cooperate in improving services to business actors. The CEROL-SS23000 online service system that has been used by LPPOM MUI since 2012 has begun to integrate with BPJPH's SIHALAL together with other LPH, where on January 20, 2022, an integration agreement was signed between BPJPH and 3 LPH," explained Muti.
On the same occasion, Muti also emphasized that the role of LPPOM MUI in the development of halal products in Indonesia is supported by the existence of LPPOM MUI in 34 provinces. LPPOM MUI is ready to provide services for all segments of business actors including MSEs. In addition, the support of competent human resources and a service system that follows customer needs and accredited halal laboratory facilities make LPPOM a One Stop Service for Halal Certification and Laboratory Analysis.
