Halal Lifestyle Forms a Law-Compliant Society

By: Dr. KH. M. Ma’rifat Iman, MA.

Deputy Chairperson of the Assembly Tarjih and Tajdid Muhammadiyah, Deputy Secretary of the KF MUI

As believers, we really need to always and constantly remind each other with truth and patience, according to Allah’s command: watawasho bil-haqqi watawashow bish-shobri. “And let you keep on intending to each other, reminding each other with al-haq, and continuing to remind one another with patience.” (HalalMUI)

Among the things that need to be constantly reminded is in the aspect of consuming halal food, because it is very important for Muslims and the community as a whole. It is the command of Allah that is very clear in the Qur’an: “O men, eat the lawful things better than what is on the earth, and do not follow the steps of shaitan; for truly the shaitan is a real enemy to you. Surely the Shayithon only tells you to do evil and vile, and say to Allah what you do not know.” (QS. Al-Baqarah, 2:168-169).

Also, the command of Allah in another verse, especially for believers, “O believers, eat among good sustenance (which is lawful), which We give to you and give thanks to Allah, if truly only You worship (worship).” (QS. Al-Baqarah, 2:172).

Furthermore, obeying God’s command in this aspect of consumption, and living a halal life in a broader sense, that means obeying and obeying the legal provisions set by God. And obeying the law and following the rules is a barometer as well as the principle and key parameters to get inner peace for the person concerned, which in turn will also be able to form and realize orderliness and peace in the life of the family and society in general.

Strictly speaking, living a halal life is a manifestation of obedience and obedience to laws and regulations in social life, which will produce a life of peace and harmony within the scope of personal, family and society.

As a simple example, obeying traffic regulations on the highway, queue in an orderly manner on a predetermined path. Not grabbing or even robbing others of the rights of the road/path, which means doing the wrongdoing, because clearly it is prohibited by religion: “And do not you (Muhammad) think that Allah is negligent of what the wrongdoers do.” (QS. 14:42). Even the wrongdoers will surely be punished by Allah: “And this is the punishment of your Lord, if He punishes the inhabitants of the countries that do wrong. Indeed, His punishment is very painful again. “(QS. 11:102). (HalalMUI)

In the Hadith Qudsi narrated from Abu Dzar, the Prophet. said about what he narrated from Allah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala that He said: “O My servants … I forbid tyranny of Me. And I made the wrongdoing as a prohibition for you, so do not you do despotic each other.” (Narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim)

In simple terms, if it violates traffic rules, for example, then it can be said to do wrong. Because seizing someone else’s road/track without rights. The impact, undoubtedly, will suffer or part of adzab, in the form of chaos and congestion on the highway, it can even cause traffic accidents, which cause untold casualties, as is the case in our country.

But if you obey the laws and traffic rules, whatever the length of the line, you will certainly be able to continue to move in their respective lanes, avoiding chaos and total congestion. As can be seen in European countries, Japan, Singapore, or Malaysia, whose people obey traffic laws and regulations.

Likewise, orderly waste disposal, as the next simple example, will certainly be able to produce a clean and comfortable environment for life together. While what happened, many of us disobeyed the rules, by littering. As a result, the environment becomes polluted, waterways are clogged, resulting in puddles of water or even flooding in the rainy season. (HalalMUI)

Immoral and Sin

Breaking the law of God, means doing evil and sinning. Undoubtedly the impact will disturb the peace of mind, cause anxiety to the soul, and life will become uneasy, besides that because the act of sin will undoubtedly be sanctioned by Allah. Like drinking khamar which is forbidden, affecting the brain to be damaged, heart disease, etc.

In terms of sharia, according to the number of scholars, people who are caught drinking khamar must be punished. And the penalty for this khamar drinker is the Law of Hadd or Hudud, whose provisions come directly from Allah and His Messenger. In this case, legal sanctions for people who drink khamar, drunk or not drunk are wracked, or whipped, as stipulated in the Hadith of the Prophet, which means: “People who drink khamar then whip him.” (HR. Muttafaqun ‘alaih).

These hadith include the ranks of mutawatir hadith, namely the hadith narrated by a large number of narrators in each of their thabaqat (levels) and there is no possibility of a lie among them. Even though scholars do not distinguish between drunk people and those who drink khamar without getting drunk, both must still be subject to punishment, in accordance with the determined Fiqhiyyah Rule. Even in another history it is mentioned that Ali bin Abi Talib said: “Rasulullah saw. whipping the khamar drinker 40 times. Abu also burns 40 times. While Uthman 80 times. All of them are sunnah. But this one (80 times) I like more.” (Narrated by Muslim). While the torture of the hereafter also awaits, if not repentance from the cursed immorality.

Ibn Umar ra. said Rasulullah saw. once said, “There will not be a paradise of disobedient people to their parents and khamar drinkers/addicts” (Narrated by Ahmad and An-Nasa’i).

This is because charity prayers and the good deeds of khamar addicts must be rejected. Jabir said that Rasulullah saw. once said, “There are three groups of people whose charity will not be accepted and will not be lifted up into the heavens of goodness (ie: slaves who run away from their masters until they return to their masters and put their hands in the palm of their master’s wives until their husbands forgive her, and people get drunk (drink khamar) until he is healthy. “(Adz-Dzahabi, Al-Kaba’ir, I / 29). (HalalMUI)

Abu Said al-Khudri said that Rasulullah saw. once said, “Allah will not accept his prayer, the drinker of the khamar, as long as there is little left in his body from the khamer.”

Rasulullah saw. also said, “Anyone who drinks khamer even though he is not drunk, Allah will turn away from himself for 40 nights… Anyone who dies in a state of being a khamer addict dies like an idol worshiper.” (Adz-Dzahabi, Al-Kaba’ir, I/29). That is, death is considered as a polytheist or an infidel.

If you break the law, or sin continues, the next impact will become stressful and continue to become symptomatic, becoming psychosomatic. That is a physical illness that stems from a disturbed mental condition, such as feeling anxious and/or experiencing prolonged stress, because guilt has committed a sinful act. Note the signal from the hadith of the Prophet. narrated by the companion of An-Nawwas bin Sam’an: “Goodness is good morals, while sin is anything that doubts your soul and you do not like to show it to others.” (Narrated by Muslim).

In another hadith from Wabishah bin Ma’bad, he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, then he said: “You came to ask about goodness?” I replied: Correct. Then he said (meaning): “Ask the fatwa to your heart. Kindness is anything that calms your heart and soul. Whereas sin is what causes heart wavering and anxiety even though many people say that it is kindness.” (Narrated by Imam Ath-Thabrani in Al-Kabir, and Al-Baihaqi in Dalaailun-nubuwwah).

Food is not halal or which is haram itself, there are basically two kinds. First, it is illegitimate Li dzatihi, in terms of its material substance, such as carcasses, blood, pork, khamar, etc., which are strictly forbidden in the Qur’an and Al-Hadith. And this was investigated by the halal certification process by LPPOM MUI, then the fatwa was determined by the MUI Fatwa Commission. (HalalMUI)

Second, illegitimate Li ghoirihi, namely in terms of behavior or how to obtain it. For example, chicken meat is actually halal. But if it is obtained by stealing, it becomes unlawful. Selling halal chicken eggs. But if you cheat on the scale/measure in selling it, then the results of the profits obtained will also be unlawful.

Illegal acts will also have an impact on the family sphere. Because, if a family head steals, or commits corruption, of course, he will be arrested by the legal apparatus. Then the court proceeded. His family will also be affected. For example, in the economic aspects of the household, it becomes shaky, ridiculed, family dignity or honor falls and is further excluded from the scope of social interaction, etc.

In the community, because there is a violation of legal provisions, undoubtedly there will also be social conflicts because no one wants to be violated or deprived of their rights. Like cheating in a measure; Waylul-lil muthoffifin… deceit, manipulation, and/or corruption, in the Shariah rules it is clear that all are not lawful.

Cheating acts are essentially a form of Sariqah practice (theft) against other people’s property and not being fair with others. Taking the property of others through doses and scales that are fraudulent, even if they are considered only a little, undoubtedly result in the threat of an accident. Of course the threat will be greater for anyone who seizes the wealth and wealth of others in greater numbers.

In the Qur’an specifically mentioned, one people was tortured for violating provisions in the economic aspect; they cheat in the scales and measures: “And to (residents) Madyan, (We sent their brothers), Syu’aib. He said, “O my people, worship Allah, there is no God for you but Him. And do not reduce the measure and the scales, in fact, I see you are in good condition and indeed I am afraid that you will suffer the punishment of the Day of Destruction (Doomsday).” (HalalMUI)

And Syu’aib said, “O my people, just keep the measure and the scales fair, and do not harm humans to their rights and do not make evil on the face of the earth by taking damage. The rest of the benefits of Allah are better for you if you are believers. And I am not a guardian of you.” (QS. Hud, 11:84-86)

But the people of the Prophet Syu’aib refused and denied his da’wah. Allah recounts: “They said,” O Shu’aib, does your religion tell you that we leave what our fathers worship or forbid us to do what we want about our property. “(QS. 11:87)

He also replied: “And I do not want to violate you by doing what I forbid. I do not mean except (bring forth) repairs as long as I have the ability. And there is no taufik for me but with (help) Allah. Only to Allah I put my trust and only to Him did I return. “(QS. 11:88)

Finally, God destroyed them with His torment: “Then they belied Shu’aib, then the punishment was overtaken on the day they were shaded by the clouds. Indeed, the punishment is the punishment of a great day. “(QS. Ash-Syuara, 26: 189).

Allah also said with meaning: “And the wrongdoers were destroyed by a voice which thundered, and they died in the house at his house. It is as if they have never lived in that place. “(Surah Hud, 11: 94-95). In another verse, it says, “Then they were struck by an earthquake, so there were dead bodies in their houses.” (QS. Al-A’raf, 7:91). (HalalMUI)

Thus, the halal provisions are not only in the aspect of food or consumption, but also cover all aspects of personal, family and community life. In summary, as believers, we must live this life in a lawful way, following the guidance of Allah and Rasulullah saw.

As a manifestation of law abiding, which in turn will undoubtedly shape the life of a family and a peaceful and harmonious society. Because all of them obey laws and regulations. In this case, the MUI has also declared the phrase “Halal is My Life”. And now it has also become more popular, widely implemented and increasingly becoming a people’s need. Wallahu a’lam bish-showab.
