Talbiyah in Hajj for Halal Life

By: KH. Arwani Faishal (Member of the Central MUI Fatwa Commission, Deputy Chair of the Bahtsul Masail PBNU Body)

Hajj or umrah in the Holy Land of Mecca echoed the Kalimah Talbiyah repeatedly. In the Hadith of the Nabi narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah, he said when explaining the character of the Nabi saw hajj, “Then he began with Tauhid Sentence, ‘Labbaika allahumma labbaik, Laa syariika laka labbaik. Innalhamda wan-ni’mata laka wal mulk, laa syariikalak (I fill your call, O Allah, I fill your call. I fulfill your call, O Allah, there is no partner for you, I am full of your calling. Verily, praise and blessings and kingdom belong only to You, there is no ally for -Your).” (HR. Muslim) (HalalMUI)

The Talbiyah sentence must be said many times, is part of the syiar Hajj or Umrah: “Hi people who believe, do not violate the syi’ar-syi’ar of Allah, and do not violate the honor of the haram months, do not (disturb) the animals had-ya, and the animals qalaa-id, and do not (also) disturb the people who visit. Baitullah while they are looking for gifts and pleasure from their Lord and if you have completed the pilgrimage, then they can hunt. And do not hate (you) for the people because they hinder you from the Haram Mosque, encourage you to persecute (to them). And help you in (doing) virtue and piety, and do not help in committing sin and transgression. And fear Allah, verily Allah is harsh in punishment.” (QS. 5:2).

Indeed, all believers have been called by Allah to do the Hajj, as mentioned in the verse of the Qur’an: “And complete the Hajj and ‘Umrah for Allah …” (QS. 2: 196). Also consider the meaning of the verse: “And the people called to do the Hajj, they will come to help walk, and the higher camels come from all directions.” (QS. Al-Hajj, 22:27).

Ibn Abbas said, in interpreting this word of Allah: “When Allah commanded Ibrahim to preach mankind to worship, Ibrahim said: “O people, really your Rabb has built a house (Ka’bah) and ordered you to do the pilgrimage to him. Then accept this call whatever hears it from rocks, trees, dust hills or whatever else, then they say ???? ????? ???? …… (HR. Ibnu Jarir 17/106). (HalalMUI)

Then those of us who believe go to the Holy Land of Mecca, do the Hajj, fulfill the call of Allah. Then lafzhiyah echoed the Talbiyah Sentence. More concretely it means pledging oneself, fulfilling God’s call to obey all the guidance of His Religion, by following the examples of the Nabi saw. And in essence, that means vowing as well as a manifestation of charity fulfilling Allah call to live a halal life. Every pilgrim in the Holy Land, who will leave for the Hajj, or just intend to carry out this religious obligation, proclaim these talbiyah sentences. We who are believers certainly must live up to the meaning contained in it. So that it becomes the right person in talbiyah, his words match the reality, really there to the teachings of Tauhid and safeguard the rights of Tauhid. Shun all things that can cancel Tauhid.

The Hajj is a religious obligation, being one of the five pillars of Islam, required in the 6th year of the Hijrah. Worship that once in a lifetime service is a moment of training and has many lessons. When thawaf, for example, the pilgrims are relatively jostling around the Ka’bah, carrying out Allah’s commands, following the sunnah that has been exemplified by the Rasulullah saw. The current condition especially, the congregation is increasing, so the terrain becomes denser and heavier. To use public facilities, for example, public transport, public bathrooms and lavatories, etc., have to queue long enough. This condition all makes the pilgrims trained and physically forged to be patient, sympathetic and tolerant and care for others, as a worship to gain Allah blessing. After the Hajj, pilgrims who returned home, should be able to grow and develop a social order full of sympathy and tolerance, so that a harmonious community life can be realized. In accordance with the mission of Islamic teachings as rahmatan lil-‘alamin.

Source of Sustenance and Its Utilization must be Halal

In carrying out of hajj, in particular, the cost of the trip, eating and drinking, Ihram clothes, etc., of course must come from halal sustenance. Obtained by halal business and methods, and also used for halal ones. And all worship in general, of course, must pay attention to this halal rule. (HalalMUI)

Because, if it is not halal, worship that is done will certainly not be accepted by Allah, even rejected. Not being a Mabrur hajj (accepted by Allah and getting good), but instead Mardud (rejected). In the hadith the Nabi saw mentioned, narrated from Abu Hurairah, he said: Rasululloh saw. has said: “Verily Allah is good, does not accept anything except the good. And verily Allah has commanded the believers (as) what was ordered to the Rasul, then Allah has said: O Rasul, eat of everything that is good and do good deeds.

And He said: O believers, eat of the good things that We have given you. Then he told the story of a man who traveled long, tangled hair, and dusty holding his hands up to the sky while praying: “O Lord, O Lord”, while the food is haram, the drink is haram, the clothes are haram, and filled with haram food, so how can a person like this be granted.” [HR. Muslim].

From this hadith is clearly understandable, the person who do the Hajj with wealth that is not halal, or firmly again with sustenance which is haram, it will be rejected, or even become the Hajj of Mardud. (HalalMUI)

The next guidance for the hajj, especially, and all of us who believe, in general, is mentioned in the verse of Al-Qur’an with the meaning: “Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do – Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah . And fear Me, O you of understanding.” (QS. 2:197).

It is all a guidance in behaving (code of conduct). And of course the guidance not only applies to pilgrims in the Holy Land, but also to practice it onward, after returning from the holy worship, in the country, in carrying out daily living activities.

Thus, it means looking for sustenance, choosing products and maintaining consumption and halal behavior not only when performing the Hajj. But it must also be practiced after working on the worship, returning to the Homeland, and so on, as long as the life is contained by the body. Simply put, it all means as a manifestation of a popular phrase: “Halal is my Life”, living a halal life.
