The Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics Indonesian Council of Ulama (LPPOM MUI) is the first Halal Inspection Body (LPH) stipulated by Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) in 2019.
The stipulation is written in the Decree of the Head of BPJPH number 177 of 2019 concerning LPPOM MUI as the Halal Inspection Body (LPH).
The stipulation is for the sake of the Muslims, by giving comfort, security, safety, and availability of halal products for people in consuming and using halal products.
Moreover, it is also a cooperation between BPJPH and LPH to check and/or examine the products in line with the law.
As the first LPH that stipulated by BPJPH, the Executive Director of LPPOM MUI, Ir. Muti Arintawati, M.Si., said that LPPOM MUI which has been established for more than 30 years is one of the LPH that implements the halal ingredients checking of products processing. Moreover, LPPOM MUI is also authorized to conduct the examination of ingredients, food products, medicines, cosmetics, usage items, services, and other processed products in processing halal certification.
“In doing the duty, LPPOM MUI is independent without any intervention of other parties including MUI,” said Muti.
LPPOM MUI is also the first Halal Certification Body (LSH) that accredited SNI ISO/IEC 17065:2012 by National Accreditation Committee (KAN) and also formally acknowledged by Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) on UAE 2055:2-2016 standard.
In the process of assessment, LPPOM MUI is strengthened by some endorsements, such as system, infrastructure, and professional and trusted resources. Regarding the infrastructure, LPPOM MUI has a laboratory that has been accredited SNI ISO/IEC 17025:2021.
Other than that, LPPOM MUI has had an online halal certification application CEROL-SS23000 since 2012 to create halal certification effectively, efficiently, and easy to be accessed anytime and anywhere.
In the aspect of resources, LPPOM MUI is enhanced by professionals and trusted people, more than 1000 auditors spread around 34 provinces in Indonesia and at 4 branches in China, Korea, and Taiwan. They are from various educational backgrounds, such as food, chemistry, biochemistry, industrial engineering, and pharmacy.
Meanwhile, the complete decision of the Decree of the Head of BPJPH, including:
- Stipulating The Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs, and Cosmetics Indonesian Council of Ulama (LPPOM MUI) as the only Halal Inspection Body (LPH) before another LPH.
- The task of the Halal Inspection Body as mentioned in the First Dictum, includes: a) Appoint and dismiss the halal auditor; b) Conducting the check and/or examination on the halal products.
- In performing the duty as mentioned in the Second Dictum, LPH uses a halal assurance system and halal certification scheme that was already created as the guidance in the implementation of halal certification.
- The stipulation of LPH as mentioned in the First Dictum following the Article 61 Act Number 33 of 2014 concerning the Implementation of Halal Product Assurance (State Gazette of the Republic of Indonesia of 2014 Number 295, additional to the State Gazette of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5604).
