Halal Labels: Preventing contamination in halal-certified restaurants

A video was recording the rules of writing greetings on cakes sold at the TOUS Les JOURS bakery, viral some time ago. The rules are printed on a piece of paper and taped to the glass shop.

There are several written rules. One of them is forbidden to write remarks contrary to Islamic law on the cake. Such as writing greetings on Christmas, Chinese New Year, and others. Other prohibited writing is valentine, halloween, and others.

Not only Tous Les Jours but D’cost restaurant also some time ago had issued the rule. In the Twitter account owner @ezkisuyanto, Thursday (12/12) uploaded a D’Cost Seafood management appeal.

The appeal is, allow visitors to bring halal-certified birthday cakes into the restaurant. If you do not have a halal certificate, you are only allowed to do photo-shoots or birthday events.

Aside from Tous Les Jours and D’cost, Yoshinoya’s (beef bowl) gyudon franchise restaurant also appealed to its visitors for the certification of halal food on a piece of paper. Of the ten rules published by Yoshinoya, one of them urged visitors to celebrate birthday parties at their stores to bring halal-certified birthday cakes.

“If you bring a birthday cake, it must be accompanied by a photocopy of halal certification, if you do not include a photocopy of halal certification. Regarding this matter, Deputy Director of the Assessment Institution of Foods, Drugs, and Cosmetics of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (LPPOM MUI), Sumunar Jati. He said the regulation already set in the halal assurance system (SJH). As a supporter of the consistency of halal product production. There are 11 criteria for the rule.

One of them is the criteria for applying HAS is the product and facility criteria. In that case, written rules for planting products, product shapes, and sensory products so as not to lead to something haram. It was also written on MUI fatwa no. 4 of 2003.

Facility criteria guide business actors to ensure that those used to produce halal products are free from something haram. According to him, this already done so that products that had not been halal certified had no impact and contaminated with restaurants that were previously certified.

“The three main criteria are the material criteria (raw materials, additives, and auxiliaries must be proven to be all halal). Product criteria (names, shapes, and flavors must not be contrary to Islamic teachings). And facility criteria (all tools used must be free of haram and unclean materials ),” said Muti.

Furthermore, according to Sumunar, the process did not end there. After being declared qualified for the results of the study, LPPOM will report to the MUI fatwa commission. If it meets the MUI fatwa criteria, then the product can be declared halal.
