Halal certification is essential for a logistics company, because it is a form of commitment from the logistics company to guarantee the halalness of the product so that it is maintained until it reaches the consumer.
Logistics services are included in the category required to carry out halal certification based on Act No. 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance (UU JPH). This is because the transportation period is in direct contact with the product for the delivery of raw materials and end products. This category is part of the supply chain that handles a product through the transportation, storage, distribution and delivery processes.
The President Director of LPPOM, Muti Arintawati, said that the obligation for halal certification in various sectors, from upstream to downstream, is not only for food and beverages but also raw materials and auxiliary materials to packaging that is in direct contact with the food. Because logistics services should guarantee that the products sent are not mixed with non-halal and unclean materials.
“Logistics services are included in the category that must carry out halal certification because they are part of a product’s supply chain. The obligation to obtain halal certification for logistics services is phased according to the products being handled. So that the activities of logistics services or companies that are involved in handling food and beverages must comply with halal certification starting in October 2024,” said Muti Arintawati.
Logistics, she continued, is one of the critical points that, in its implementation, is not carried out by the producer but by another party with a risk of non-halalness in the halal-certified product. That is the importance of halal assurance for services, especially those directly related to products subject to halal certification obligations. In this case, it includes storage services, transportation and distribution of halal materials and products, sales, presentation and retailers, which are usually not carried out directly by the producer.
Seeing this, it is clear that halal certification will provide added value compared to competitors who have not received it. Opportunities for opening new markets will be wide open, in line with the recent high need for halal product consumption.
Based on LPPOM data as of July 2024, a total of 219 logistics companies with 557 products have obtained halal certificates through strict inspections by LPH LPPOM. Logistics service companies provide packaging, storage, and distribution services.
LPPOM continues to synergize to encourage government efforts to realize mandatory halal. Logistics service business actors must meet a series of requirements to obtain a halal certificate. To explore this further, LPPOM provides space for every business actor to learn the halal certification process and flow by taking an introduction to halal certification (PSH) class by registering at the link https://halalmui.org/pengenalan-sertifikasi-halal/.
