About Consumer Goods, Why Should They Be Certified Halal?

Act Number 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance (JPH Act) states that all products circulating in Indonesia must be certified halal. This does not rule out also apply to used goods. Even so, this still reaps pros and cons in the community.

Article 1, paragraph (1) of the JPH Act states that the products in question are in the form of goods and / or services related to food, beverages, drugs, cosmetics, chemical products, biological products, genetically modified products, as well as used, used, or used goods. utilized by the community.

Even so, some people interpret by themselves what are referred to as used goods that need to be certified halal. This is because there are no derivative rules regarding the explanation of the intended items. Not surprisingly, there are still many companies that want to certify used goods because they thought that the products produced are products that are categorized as used goods, but require verification from MUI whether the product can be certified or not.

According to Ir. Muti Arintawati, M.Sc., Executive Director of LPPOM MUI, what is meant by used goods in general are items that are used and involved in everyday human life, mainly used for worship or in contact with products that are consumed.

“These items could be attached to the body and used for worship. That is why it must be ensured that these items are free from unclean materials. Another example is cooking utensils that come in direct contact with food, ”explained Muti.

Based on the guidance given by the MUI Fatwa Commission at this time, there are at least two points of use that can be certified halal. First, all items that are in direct contact with the food consumed.

This is because halal food can be contaminated with non-halal products. Fryers, for example. There are non-stick frying pans that generally use fat-derived ingredients for non-stickiness. Talking about fat, there are two options, namely fat that comes from animals or plants.

Meanwhile, in terms of product processing, LPPOM MUI will look at the production facilities used in conjunction with other products containing unclean goods or not.

“If there is a shared facility that is used interchangeably between products that are certified and products containing pork, it is based on the criteria of the Halal Assurance System (SJH) owned by MUI, that is not allowed. This is because there is a chance for the product to be contaminated,” explained Muti.

The second point relates to used goods made from animal skin, such as bags, jackets and shoes. Basically, leather is said to be halal as long as it has been tanned and comes from halal animals, even though the method of slaughter is not known.

However, it is different when the skin comes from pigs. Even though it has been tanned, MUI still cannot declare its halal. Currently quite a lot of leather shoes are produced using pork skin, so Muslim consumers need to be careful when buying them.

There are several things that can be done to avoid Muslim consumers when choosing consumer goods. First, choose a halal certified product. This is the easiest way to choose halal products. Unfortunately, currently there are not many used goods that are certified halal, so alternatives to halal used goods are still limited.

Therefore, as Muslim consumers, we need to be critical when choosing consumer goods. At least we need to find information whether these items have the opportunity to use materials that are unclean or not.

“We really have to learn. Like when choosing shoes or leather bags, at least we have to know the characteristics of pigskin in the form of three dots that clash together and make a collection. In addition, do not hesitate to ask the seller about the ingredients used in the product, “said Muti.

As a Muslim, let’s continue to adopt a halal lifestyle. One of them is by continuing to consume and use halal products. You can check the list of halal products through the website halalmui.org or the HalalMUI application which can be downloaded on the Playstore. (YN)
