  • Applying These 5 Strategies, COSMAX Produces Thousands of Halal Cosmetic Products

The obligation for halal certification as a mandate from Act No. 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance (UU JPH) for cosmetic products has mandatory halal adjustments until 2026. This is stated by KAHI PT. COSMAX Indonesia, Tin Kurniati, in the Cosmobeaute Indonesia seminar with the topic “Halal & Sustainable Cosmetics: Synergies and Benefits” some time ago at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

“The closer the implementation of this certification obligation needs to be supported by the widest possible dissemination of information. Business actors must have a big commitment to halal and sustainability principles so consumers can accept their products,” explained Tin Kurniati.

The mandatory halal policy in Indonesia was welcomed positively by PT. COSMAX Indonesia has an opportunity to increase sales of cosmetic products in the local Indonesian market, export cosmetic products to Muslim countries, and transfer production facilities from other COSMAX factories that do not yet have halal certification. Apart from that, COSMAX also confidently chose LPPOM MUI as its partner in product halal inspection.

“With the fourth largest population in the world and 90% of the population being Muslim, Indonesia is considered the largest halal market in the world. LPPOM MUI, which gives this award, is one of the world’s three best halal certification institutions. Two of them are with the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) and the Singapore Islamic Religious Council (MUIS),” explained Tin Kurniati.

To successfully fulfill the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH) implementation, COSMAX has implemented five (5) strategies. First, COSMAX management – COSMAX Indonesia management has been committed since 2014 to providing the first halal facilities in the COSMAX Group worldwide. Second, certification of halal facilities and products – products began to be certified halal in 2014, in line with the verification of halal facilities.

The next point. Third is monitoring the implementation of halal regulations – monitoring the performance of halal rules is carried out by appointing competent representatives from each division as members of the Halal Committee. Fourth, selecting halal materials — ensuring conformity with halal regulations is also carried out with internal audit activities whose results are reported periodically to LPPOM MUI via CEROL-SS23000. Fifth, registration of halal materials and products – the formula research section (RNI) has alternative raw materials to produce halal formulas. The regulatory team will ensure all halal supporting documents are complete and follow halal regulations.

These five strategies successfully led COSMAX to win the Best Halal Management System category at the 2023 LPPOM MUI Halal Awards some time ago. Apart from that, Tin Kurniati said that since obtaining halal certification in February 2016, her party has been producing halal cosmetic products in stages. Now, all 2,380 COSMAX products have been certified halal. This is the largest number from one company in the Indonesian cosmetics market. (*)
