The Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), together with the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), issued an official release on April 21, 2025, regarding the finding of pork DNA content in nine (9) food products. Here is LPPOM’s explanation.
The halal certification process is a tested, complex, and layered system that ensures good inspection results. LPPOM, as an institution tasked with inspecting products’ halalness, needs to explain the efforts and steps we have taken to clarify these findings. We do this as part of LPPOM’s commitment to strengthening public trust in halal certification.
LPPOM Search Results
Of the nine (9) products announced by BPJPH, seven (7) have been audited by LPPOM. Based on the investigation that we have conducted through audit records, in-depth discussions with auditors, and laboratory test result inspection documents, we convey the following:
- The Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH) has carried out the audit process thoroughly.
- Laboratory testing of products audited by LPPOM using the Real-Time PCR method in an accredited laboratory showed no pork content.
- This data has become the basis for the Fatwa Commission of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) to determine the halal fatwa of the product and BPJPH issues halal certificates based on the halal determination.
LPPOM’s Steps to Respond to Findings
In addition to data investigation, we attempted to conduct laboratory tests on the products in question. In the market, we failed to find all products with the same batch number as those announced by BPJPH because the products had been withdrawn from circulation. Gradually, we took samples on the market and immediately conducted the testing process.
Testing was carried out using several methods in two accredited laboratories. One of the real-time PCR methods, SNI 9278:2024, is recommended by BPJPH as a method of porcine identification analysis. Here are the test results for some of the products we have completed:
No | Sample Identity | Producer Name | No Batch /Lot | LPPOM MUI Laboratory Test | ISO 17025 Accredited External Lab Testing
Real Time PCR | Real Time PCR (SNI 9278:2024) | LC-MS/MS | Real Time PCR | LC-MS/MS
1 | Corniche Fluffy Jelly Marshmallow | Sucere Foods Corporation, Philippines | 05222212 S1 | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected |
2 | ChompChomp Car Mallow (Car Shaped Marshmallows) | Shandong Qingzhou Erko Foodstuffs, China | N0190824B | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected |
3 | ChompChomp Flower Mallow (Flower Shaped Marshmallow) | Shandong Qingzhou Erko Foodstuffs, China | N0221224B | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected |
4 | Hakiki Gelatin | PT. Hakiki Donarta, Indonesia | HG2502403 | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected | Not detected |
Note: The other three products are still being tested.
The test results show differences in the results of the same product with different batches than those released by BPJPH. Therefore, we consider it necessary to conduct further investigation to determine the cause of the detection of pork contamination so that all related parties can take corrective action and prevent similar incidents.
Post-Halal Certification Supervision
We appreciate the steps taken by BPJPH to protect Indonesian Muslim consumers. This is in line with the supervisory function stated in Government Regulation No. 42 of 2024 (PP 42/2024). The guarantee of halal products does not stop when a product or service successfully obtains a halal certificate; what is even greater is how the halalness of the product can be maintained continuously.
We understand the concerns that arise in the community and fully support efforts to improve the post-halal certification supervision system. Therefore, we always strive to be an active partner in strengthening this system.
LPPOM invites the public, business actors, and all parties to take an active role in supervising the implementation of halal product assurance. We open a dialogue and reporting space for suspicious products through Call Center 14056 and WhatsApp 0811-1148-696. We will coordinate with BPJPH as a supervisory institution to be able to follow up on the report.
We understand that halal is a great mandate for Muslims. LPPOM will continue to strive to be an institution that conducts inspections and protects and provides peace of mind for the community. We express our gratitude for the public’s trust in the results of LPH LPPOM’s inspections during its 36 years of service. (***)
