  • Halal Packaging, the Key to Safe and Popular Products in the Global Market
Kemasan Halal, Kunci Produk Aman dan Laris di Pasar Global

LPPOM, in collaboration with the Indonesian Packaging Federation (IPF), reiterated the importance of halal aspects throughout the production chain, including packaging. This is considered crucial in efforts to increase understanding and awareness among packaging industry players.

To comprehensively strengthen the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH), LPPOM and IPF reiterate the importance of halal aspects in product packaging. Packaging is no longer merely a physical barrier, but a crucial part of maintaining a product’s halal status from upstream to downstream.

Through this collaboration, it is hoped that a more profound awareness will grow among packaging industry players regarding their crucial role in maintaining product halal status. Packaging is no longer considered a mere supplementary element, but rather a vital part of the production chain. If neglected, it can become a critical point that could potentially render a product’s halal status invalid.

According to Raafqi Ranasasmita, Corporate Secretary of LPH LPPOM, packaging is crucial for ensuring the halal status of a product. Contamination can affect a product’s halal status if it contains non-halal ingredients. As a Halal Inspection Body (LPH), LPPOM remains committed to ensuring the halal status of all products, from raw materials to the final product.

“Packaging can contain critical ingredients, such as tallow or processed fat, which can come from halal or non-halal animal sources. Therefore, if a product is halal but the packaging is questionable, the halal status of the product is also questionable,” Raafqi explained.

Packaging plays a crucial role in maintaining a product’s halal status, as contamination with non-halal ingredients can alter the overall halal status of a product. Therefore, LPPOM, as a Halal Inspection Body (LPH), is fully committed to ensuring that every step in the production chain, from raw material selection to the final product, is halal.

Amid growing public awareness of a halal and healthy lifestyle, halal-certified products tend to be more trusted and preferred by consumers, not only among Muslims but also non-Muslims who prioritize quality and hygiene standards. In an increasingly competitive industry, consumer trust is a crucial asset, and halal certification has proven to increase loyalty and expand market share, both domestically and globally.

Bibit Haryanto, General Manager of PT IMCP, conveyed this at a seminar entitled “Implementation of Halal Packaging in the Food and Beverage (Food) Industry and Other Products” held by LPH LPPOM on July 18, 2025, at Diponegoro University (UNDIP), Semarang. This event was a collaboration between LPH LPPOM and the Indonesian Packaging Federation (IPF).

“After obtaining halal certification, customer trust levels have increased significantly, by around 20–30%. This indicates that consumers are growing increasingly concerned about the halal aspects of products, particularly in the food, beverage, and other consumer product industries. Halal certification not only guarantees safety and compliance with Sharia law, but also provides added value that strengthens competitiveness in the market,” said Bibit.

Through this seminar, LPH LPPOM and IPF hope that packaging industry players will increasingly understand that halal certification is not limited to primary raw materials but encompasses all elements, including packaging. This aligns with the increasingly stringent halal regulations in Indonesia and the global market.

This activity also serves as a strategic platform for business players to engage in direct discussions with experts and stakeholders. In this forum, LPPOM provides a space for dialogue and technical consultations aimed at industry players, addressing various challenges in the halal certification process for packaging.

Furthermore, LPH LPPOM services are now more accessible. Businesses can easily and quickly obtain public information regarding the halal certification process through the Customer Care service at 14056 Call Center and WhatsApp at 0811-1148-696. LPPOM also holds free online classes on “Introduction to Halal Certification” (PSH) every second and fourth week of each month through halalmui.org/pengenalan-sertifikasi-halal. (ZUL)
