To encourage the realization of the Law on Halal Product Assurance (UU JPH), LPPOM has always conducted various programs. One of them is currently being undertaken massively, and it is socialization or halal education in multiple circles. This time, LPOM provided halal education to more than 100 economics IPB University college students.
ITechnological advances continue to increase. One ingredient can be derived into various types of processed products, ranging from food, cosmetics, medicines, and consumer goods. This is the fundamental reason why halal certification is vital for a product. The Assessment Institute of Foods, Drugs, and Cosmetics (LPPOM), as one of the Halal Inspection Body (LPH), started halal certification in Indonesia 35 years ago, to be precise, in 1989.
The Halal Audit Manager of LPPOM, M. Salman Al Farisi, S. TP, conveyed that matters in a public lecture on the theme “Halal Certification: Concept, Implementation, and Global Challenges” held online on September 6th, 2024. This public lecture was attended by more than 100 college students from the Department of Management, Economy, and Management Faculty, IPB University.
“We took the example of pigs. In Islamic science, the word mentioned is lahmul khinzir, which means pork. Ulama interprets pork as not just part of the meat but everything related to pigs. Moreover, in terms of price, it’s more economical than other kinds of meat. The output of industrial products is very diverse,” explained Salman.
Some examples of pig-related product derivatives can be entered into any product category, including food, cosmetics, medicines, and consumer goods. Pigs’ fur, for example, can be turned into a brush to smear seasoning on foods. And its skin can be used as bag material or shoes. Not to mention that for food products, even just from its fat, it can produce various products such as milk, butter, flavor, etc.
“As a Muslim, we are tested. Can we get away from choosing products that the halal are guaranteed? The concept of halal certification is needed to clarify still gray or syuhbat (unclear) concepts, such as whether a product can be traced from its ingredients, how the production facilities are used, and so on,” explained Salman.
The overall production process must fulfill the conditions summarized in the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH), which was previously called the Halal Assurance System (HAS). At the beginning of its formation, LPPOM designed the HAS criteria to become a guide for businesspeople in implementing its halal products.
Of course, Indonesian Muslims should be proud. In terms of implementing halal certification, Indonesia is a world leader. A bunch of Halal Certification Body Overseas (LSHLN) adopted HAS in their countries as the condition for halal certification. This HAS was also adopted as the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH).
The need for halal certification overseas is not only to answer the Muslim needs in their country but also more fabulous for product exports to Muslim consumers overseas. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the target is to fulfill the consumer’s needs in Indonesia, which is the Muslim majority.
Because of that, the government released Constitution Number 33 of 2014 about Halal Product Assurance (UU JPH) and its derivatives as a form of government partiality in guaranteeing Indonesian Muslim rights to halal products. In the implementation, the government gives a phasing for the transition process. The nearest one is on 17th October 2024, the deadline for fulfilling the must-halal certificate for food and beverage products.
This is not easy, especially when recalling the large number of businesspeople in Indonesia. Meanwhile, many businesspeople are still not realizing the phasing obligation and process of halal certification.
In response to that matter, LPPOM, with its various programs, will always be there to help facilitate businesspeople. By choosing LPPOM, at least businesspeople will earn four main advantages.
First, the ease of earning comprehensive information related to procedures and the regulation of halal certification. Second, the ease of the halal certification process. Third, the ease of understanding and obeying the halal regulations. Fourth, the ease in fulfilling halal certification criteria.
LPPOM will open a discussion room for every business person whose products have not been halal certified through this Customer Care Service on Call Center 14056 or by WhatsApp 0811-1148-696. Business people can also deepen the flow and process of halal certification by joining the Halal Certification Introduction (PSH) class that is held routinely every week at https://halalmui.org/pengenalan-sertifikasi-halal/.
From the consumer side, LPPOM provides a platform for Halal Product Searching that can be accessed through the website www.halalmui.org or the Halal MUI app that you can download from the Google Playstore and also the BPJPH website. This will make it easier for consumers and businesses to look for a halal product reference easily, fast, and accessible. LPPOM also distributes halal education, spread through LPPOM’s social media. Moreover, LPPOM has a laboratory accredited by KAN for halal and vegan testing. This laboratory has been accredited ISO/IEC 17025:2017. LPPOM laboratory opens a service for leather testing for the used goods. Therefore, you don’t need more hesitation in testing the halal of the products in the LPPOM MUI Laboratory.
