  • From Pig DNA to Local Reagents, LPPOM Presents Halal Research at the 2025 Global Halal Summit

With the support of the LPPOM MUI laboratory, businesses can now benefit from faster and easier BPJPH halal certification. The reliability of this halal laboratory is proven through various testing research, including DNA analysis and ethanol limit determination, all aimed at ensuring that products truly meet halal standards. This strategic position brings LPPOM to the international stage as Indonesia’s representative in the global halal ecosystem.

On the international stage, LPPOM has achieved impressive results again. On September 17, 2025, LPPOM received a special invitation to present its halal testing research at the Halal Certification Body Convention (HCBC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This forum was part of the Global Halal Summit (GhaS) 2025, a prestigious annual event initiated by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) to bring together halal certification bodies, governments, Sharia experts, and industry representatives from various countries. The presence of LPPOM demonstrates that this institution not only plays a vital role at the national level but is also recognized for its contribution to the global halal landscape.

On this occasion, Heryani, General Manager of the LPPOM MUI Laboratory, served as the keynote speaker and outlined several strategic initiatives LPPOM is currently pursuing. She explained the halal testing regulations implemented by the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), scientific research supporting the issuance of fatwas by the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), and efforts to develop high-quality local halal reagents. This presentation demonstrated LPPOM’s consistent integration of modern science with Islamic law, thus providing credible and accountable halal testing methods.

The 2025 Global Halal Summit was opened by Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). In his remarks, Anwar emphasized that halal is not just a label, but a symbol of trust that serves as a foundation for consumers worldwide.

He also emphasized the critical role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in driving the growth of the halal industry. This message aligns with the role of LPPOM, which has not only assisted large enterprises but also supported MSMEs to compete through quality-assured halal products.

In a session themed “Exploring Halal Forensics: Integrating Islamic Jurisprudence with Modern Science,” Heryani presented the latest research on porcine DNA testing to support the authentication of the halal certification process. “LPPOM is actively involved in the development of this method, even participating in Technical Committee 19-07 on Biomolecular and Biotechnology at the National Standardization Agency (BSN). Through this involvement, LPPOM helps establish standards for porcine DNA testing, both for regular samples and samples with low DNA content, which is a crucial aspect of halal testing,” he explained.

The presentation also touched on the latest regulations, as stipulated in BPJPH Head Decree No. 78 of 2025, which requires halal inspection institutions to conduct tests related to porcine DNA, porcine protein, and ethanol content. Heryani emphasized that LPPOM not only conducts testing as a routine laboratory practice but also provides crucial research data to support the issuance of fatwas by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

“One example is LPPOM’s research on the alcohol content in nabiz, or fruit soaks, which ultimately became the basis for establishing a maximum limit of 0.5 percent ethanol in halal beverage products,” Heryani explained. This contribution demonstrates how LPPOM’s scientific research directly influences fatwa decisions, providing legal certainty and protection for the community.

In addition to DNA testing and ethanol research, LPPOM has also developed a variety of other testing methods, including water penetration testing, human DNA testing, identification of various animal species, and testing related to food and cosmetic safety. These innovations not only support industry needs but also strengthen the scientific foundation of the halal standards implemented in Indonesia and recognized internationally.

At the forum, LPPOM shared the stage with several experts from Malaysia. These included Roslan Alias from the Malaysian Department of Standards, who presented laboratory standards, and Dr. Padillah Yahya from the Malaysian Department of Chemistry, who explained halal testing in his country.

The lively discussion received an overwhelming response from international participants. Delegates from various countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, asked questions about the implementation of laboratory testing and its challenges. Some even continued the discussion after the session, demonstrating the strong interest in LPPOM’s experience and expertise.

Since 2010, the HCBC has become a key platform bringing together halal certification bodies, academics, and halal-certified companies from various sectors. The HCBC has always been part of the broader Global Halal Summit series, which also includes the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), the world’s largest halal product exhibition. Furthermore, the International Halal Technical Capacity Development Program (IHTCDP) focuses on enhancing the capacity of global halal certification bodies.

LPPOM’s participation in GhaS 2025 highlights Indonesia’s strategic position in the global development of the halal industry. Through consistent research, testing innovation, and contributions to fatwa issuance, LPPOM demonstrates its commitment to strengthening the halal ecosystem, providing quality assurance for consumers, and encouraging the growth of a highly competitive halal industry in the global market.
