In order to support mandatory halal regulations in Indonesia, LPPOM held a seminar for food and beverage business actors. This is expected to be a strengthening step for business actors in facing various challenges of halal certification in Indonesia so that they can get BPJPH halal certificates easily, quickly, and affordably.
The Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics (LPPOM) explained the mandatory halal certification regulations that apply to food and beverage business actors in Indonesia. This is considered important as a form of fulfilling regulations for food and beverage companies that will trade their products in Indonesia.
As is well known, Indonesia has implemented mandatory halal certification for all products that enter, circulate and are traded in Indonesia. This is stated in the provisions of Article 160 of Government Regulation (PP) Number 42 of 2024.
In the regulation, it is stated that medium and large business actors are required to be certified halal by the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), except for products that are indeed prohibited. Those included in the category of mandatory halal certification are goods and/or services for food products, beverages, slaughtered products, and slaughtering services.
Head of BPJPH, Dr. Haikal Hassan, S.T., M.T., conveyed this in a seminar themed “Mandatory Halal October Update: Implications and Opportunities for the Food and Beverage Industry” held by LPPOM at the SIAL InterFOOD 2024 exhibition in collaboration with PT Kristamedia Pratama (Krista Exhibitions) at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) on November 16, 2024.
He said that halal is part of a lifestyle, because it is Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin or can be accepted by everyone and provides many benefits, not only for Muslims but all groups. The benefits in this case also include aspects of health, environment, social, and economy in the long term.
According to Haikal, halal is not only seen in the final product results but also includes the production process. “This is what is called halal traceability; this is very important to see all the ingredients used in the production process of a product, food for example,” said Haikal.
Meanwhile, the President Director of LPPOM, Muti Arintawati M.Si, conveyed several essential things that need to be considered in preparing for halal certification. First, prepare supporting documents for critical and non-critical materials. Second, check whether the name, shape and packaging of the product are in accordance with the provisions of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) fatwa No. 44/2020 and meet the aspects in the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH) criteria.
Third, check the facilities including buildings, rooms, machines, as well as leading equipment and auxiliary equipment used to handle, store and distribute products. All outlets (for restaurants) and shops (for retailers) must be registered (listed in the certification application). Facilities that come into contact with materials and products must be free from non-halal materials and never come into contact with non-halal materials.
“By obtaining a halal certificate, the company will gain increased consumer trust, especially Muslim consumers, then wider market access to foreign countries and increased sales results,” said Muti.
Currently, LPPOM is making various efforts to encourage the realization of mandatory halal for all product categories according to government direction. This is done starting from a number of programs to facilitate business actors in carrying out halal certification quickly and easily, including providing free halal certification facilities and education as carried out at the current SIAL InterFOOD 2024 seminar.
The SIAL InterFOOD 2024 exhibition is one of the 25th edition of the international exhibition that focuses on strategies for actors in the food, beverage, catering, hotel, restaurant, cafe, and bakery sectors, with more than 1,200 participants from more than 25 countries, including 150 MSMEs from various regions who will introduce their superior products.
This event was warmly welcomed by thousands of visitors, from business actors to professionals who attended this exhibition. Of course, LPPOM was present at this event. Participants were also enthusiastic about asking questions and consulting with LPPOM regarding halal certification issues, especially food and beverage products, as well as laboratory testing for food and beverage products.
For those of you who still need to carry out halal certification, you can register by selecting LPH LPPOM to carry out halal inspections.
