LPH LPPOM (The Halal Inspection Body of The Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics) once again plays a vital role in supporting the development of laboratories in Indonesia. LPH LPPOM was present at the 2025 National Professional Seminar. LPH LPPOM’s participation in this seminar is part of its commitment to broadening understanding regarding laboratory testing in the halal certification process in Indonesia.
Halal certification is essential for food and beverage products circulating in Indonesia to meet mandatory halal regulations. This certification process involves supervising raw materials and production processes and requires product testing. This is where laboratory testing is essential, as it ensures that each stage of halal testing is carried out correctly and accurately.
With good laboratory testing, collecting supporting data in the halal certification process can run more efficiently and be accounted for. Laboratory testing supports the halal certification process’s success and ensures the quality and halalness of marketed products.
The results of the product halal examination may contain ingredients whose halalness is questionable, so laboratory tests can be carried out. This was conveyed by the General Manager of the LPPOM Laboratory, Heryani, S.Si., M.T.Pn. in the 2025 National Professional Seminar, which took place on February 15 at the Zeta Building of the IPB University Vocational School, Bogor,
“This is explained in detail in the Fatwa of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) No. 80 of 2022 concerning Materials or Products that Must Undergo Laboratory Testing. One of the points states that to guarantee the halalness and purity of several products, it is necessary to test for pork contamination and its derivatives (for processed products and meat derivatives), the alcohol content in them (for fermented drinks), and water permeability (for cosmetic products), “explained Hery.
He explained that products that will be certified halal certainly require the fulfilment of scientific data from laboratory tests to ensure that the product does not use haram or impure goods prohibited in Islam. In addition, it must be ensured that there is no mixture of contamination between halal materials or products with haram or impure ones.
Tracing the halal status of the material is based on the adequacy of supporting documents for the halalness of the laboratory test material. Although not the primary determinant of whether a product is halal or haram, laboratory test results still support data for decisions in the Indonesian Council of Ulama Fatwa Commission (KF MUI) meeting.
As a Halal Inspection Body (LPH), LPPOM continues to improve its services. Now, through the LPPOM MUI Laboratory, business actors can conduct halal-related tests and various tests from the product safety side for industry needs in meeting halal and product safety regulations.
In this case, laboratory testing is a form of guarantee in the halal certification process, fulfilling the need to gain consumer trust. Business actors need to ensure that the products they offer meet the halal regulations of the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH).
Of course, again, halal certification is the primary key to providing certainty to Muslim consumers so that they can confidently choose products that comply with Islamic law. With halal certification, consumers are guaranteed that the product has undergone a strict verification process and is valid according to Islamic law.
The LPPOM MUI Laboratory is Indonesia’s first and only laboratory that offers one-stop testing for halal and vegan. The LPPOM MUI laboratory has various services for halal testing and food safety (thayyib). For other complete tests, please check https://e-halallab.com/.
