LPH LPPOM North Sumatra held a Halal Slaughterer Training (Juleha) in Medan to strengthen the national halal ecosystem. This activity aims to produce competent and high-integrity slaughterers to ensure the supply of halal meat and support the acceleration of halal certificate issuance from BPJPH.
The Juleha training, conducted by the Halal Inspection Body (LPH) LPPOM North Sumatra on October 22 at the LPH LPPOM North Sumatra Hall in Medan, was attended by 17 participants from various regencies and cities in North Sumatra, as well as one participant from Aceh Province. This activity is part of LPH LPPOM North Sumatra’s commitment to developing professional halal human resources and ensuring that the slaughtering process in the field complies with sharia standards and national regulations.
The event was officially opened by the Chairman of the North Sumatra Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), represented by the Deputy Chairman, Dr. H. Ardiansyah, M.Ag. In his remarks, he emphasized that the issue of halal meat is fundamental to Islamic teachings. “Islam teaches the proper and correct use of animals, including slaughtering,” he said.
He added that the profession of halal slaughterer is not merely a technical task, but also carries religious and spiritual value. “When someone slaughters properly according to sharia, they are not only fulfilling their professional duties, but also performing their religious duties and honoring the animal,” he added.
Furthermore, Dr. Ardiansyah highlighted the still-low number of halal slaughterers with official competency certificates, despite the increasing need for professionals in this field, as well as the development of the national halal industry. “There are still very few people who have halal slaughterer certification. In the future, the challenges in the field will become increasingly complex, and it is a shared responsibility, including that of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), to prepare competent human resources,” he explained.
This training featured experienced speakers, including Prof. Dr. H. Basyaruddin, M.S., Director of the LPH LPPOM North Sumatra, Drs. The training was attended by Dr. Sanusi Luqman, Lc., M.A., Head of the Fatwa Division of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) of North Sumatra, and Dr. Irwansyah, M.Hi., Secretary of the Fatwa Division of the MUI of North Sumatra. The material covered sharia aspects, slaughtering techniques, and the application of national and international halal standards, enabling participants to become professional Juleha (Islamic Juleha) practitioners ready to support the sustainability of the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH).
The Director of the LPH LPPOM of North Sumatra, Prof. Dr. H. Basyaruddin, M.S., emphasized that the Juleha training represents a synergy between Islamic law and modern technological advances. “Halal Slaughterers (Juleha) are a concrete manifestation of the synergy between sharia and science in building a comprehensive halal meat food system,” he said. He believes that Juleha is not merely a technical practitioner, but also a guardian of halal integrity and peace of mind for the community.
“In the era of the global halal industry, Juleha is an agent of change and a halal ambassador, ensuring that every piece of halal meat comes from a correct, hygienic, and blessed slaughtering process,” he said. He added that halal concerns not only the nutritional content of food, but also the method of obtaining it. Therefore, Juleha plays a crucial role in the halal supply chain, determining the halal status of a meat product.
Prof. Basyaruddin emphasized that Juleha plays a strategic role in maintaining national halal integrity, integrating sharia knowledge with technology, and acting as a social missionary in the halal food sector. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration between Juleha, government agencies, industry, and educational institutions to strengthen the halal system in Indonesia, particularly in supporting the issuance of BPJPH halal certificates.
He further stated that the prospects for the Juleha profession are vast, both nationally and globally. Indonesia, which aims to become a Global Halal Hub by 2030, requires more than 50,000 certified Juleha across all provinces. Demand for Juleha workers is increasing in the meat export, halal hotel, and catering sectors. It is opening up new business opportunities, such as the establishment of Juleha Training Centers and MSME-based Halal Butcheries.
“The Juleha profession is a calling of faith and social responsibility. It’s not just a hand that cuts, but a heart that safeguards the blessings of the community,” Prof. Basyaruddin emphasized. He quoted Surah An-Nahl verse 114: “Eat from what Allah has provided for you, lawful and good, and be grateful to Allah if you truly worship Him.”
Through this training, the North Sumatra LPPOM LPH hopes to produce more competent Juleha who are ready to ensure the halalness of halal meat, support the BPJPH halal certification process, and strengthen Indonesia’s position as a global hub for the halal industry. (YN)
