  • Guaranteeing Muslim Consumer Rights, Packaging Must Be Halal Certified
Urgensi Sertifikasi Halal pada Kemasan Makanan dalam Menjamin Keamanan Konsumen Muslim

The halalness of food products depends not only on the raw materials used but also on the packaging process, which complies with Islamic law principles. In this case, LPH LPPOM ensures that every aspect of production, including packaging, must comply with the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH).

Packaging plays an essential role in maintaining the halalness of a product because contamination of non-halal materials in the packaging can change the halal status of a product as a whole. Therefore, LPH LPPOM, as a Halal Inspection Body, is fully committed to ensuring that every step in the production chain, from the selection of raw materials to the final product, is maintained halal.

The President Director of LPPOM, Muti Arintawati, conveyed this in a webinar themed “Halal Food Packaging: Maintaining the Purity & Safety of Food Products” held by LPH LPPOM on April 24, 2025.

“Halal food packaging not only functions as a product protector, but also as a guarantee that every product consumed by the Muslim community is free from haram and impure materials. With increasing consumer awareness, guaranteeing the halalness of products is very important to provide certainty and build trust for consumers,” explained Muti.

Meanwhile, according to the Deputy for Partnership and Halal Standardization, Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), Abdul Syakur, the packaging must be halal certified as part of the goods. This is in accordance with the Halal Product Assurance (JPH) regulation, the latest of which is Government Regulation (PP) No. 42 of 2024.

“Packaging is one of the goods that are currently entering a transition period for halal certification. The transition deadline ends on October 17, 2026. This means that after that, all food packaging that exists and is used in Indonesia must be halal certified. Of course, there is still time for packaging industry players to start the halal certification process,” explained Abdul.

Director of Partnership and Halal Audit Services at LPPOM, Muslich, said that the production process needs to be considered when halal certification of food packaging is used. This includes raw materials, auxiliary materials, and other materials involved in packaging production. All must come from pure sources, halal materials according to Islamic law, do not contain/are exposed to impurities, and can be handled according to Islamic law during production. This is what will be proven during the audit.

“The halalness of food packaging can be proven through supporting documents, either in the form of a halal certificate from a recognized institution or other documents, such as material specifications or the process flow for making packaging products,” explained Muslich.

On the same occasion, the Education and Sustainability Director of the Indonesian Packaging Federation, Putut Pramono, revealed that the global trend related to the need for halal and safe packaging is increasing. This has encouraged the emergence of various innovations in food packaging that not only meet safety standards but also provide halal safety for consumers. Halal packaging is now essential in ensuring quality and trust while supporting the development of a more sustainable food industry.

“Halal certification on food packaging provides added value to the product. In addition to meeting regulatory demands, this certification improves the image and competitiveness of products in the domestic and global markets, as well as expanding the market and increasing income. Halal certification on food packaging not only guarantees the halalness of the product but also supports the economic growth of the halal industry sector in Indonesia,” said Putut.

In this case, LPPOM also encourages the government program of course by helping every food and beverage packaging business actor to carry out the halal certification process, to realize the certainty of the availability of packaging for halal products for the community and to realize a sense of security and comfort for Muslim consumers in Indonesia and the world.

LPPOM opens a discussion space for every business actor whose products have not yet been halal certified through the Customer Care service at Call Center 14056 or WhatsApp 0811-1148-696. In addition, business actors can also explore the flow and process of halal certification by attending the Introduction to Halal Certification (PSH) class, which is held routinely every 2nd and 4th week of each month https://halalmui.org/pengenalan-sertifikasi-halal/.
