Di World Halal Summit 2024, LPPOM Paparkan Temuan AI Pendeteksi Kulit Hewan

LPPOM collaborates with various parties to conduct research related to the application of AI in identifying the authenticity of animal species. This is to facilitate the identification of the halal status of consumer goods. The findings were presented at the 2024 World Halal Summit (WHS), which took place in Türkiye. The event was also attended by the Centre for the Empowerment of the Halal Industry of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry (PPIH Kemenperin), which enlivened the 2024 Halal Expo.

The discussion of halal certification is not only busy domestically but has also become a hot topic on the global stage. Animal skin detection on consumer goods is one of the topics discussed at the 2024 World Halal Summit (WHS). The Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics (LPPOM) was present as one of the speakers at the session entitled “The Role of Technology in Shaping the Future of the Halal Industry”, which took place on November 29, 2024 in Istanbul.

This session discussed the role of technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, and digitalization in improving the quality and verification of certification, so that more advanced, modern, and sustainable halal standards are realized. LPPOM Corporate Secretary Manager, Raafqi Ranasasmita, as one of the speakers, explained the latest innovations related to the role of AI in improving the accuracy of halal assurance services, which is in line with the increasingly complex needs of the industry.

Specifically, Raafqi presented the results of the latest research that shows the importance of applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) in identifying the authenticity of animal species, so that the halal status of a consumer product can be identified more easily and accurately. This research also addresses the challenges of accuracy in conventional methods.

Raafqi explained that this study used a Machine Learning approach with the Backpropagation Neural Network (BNN) algorithm with sample objects of several animal species, such as cows, pigs, kangaroos, goats, and sheep. The results of the study, which were supported by LPPOM, the Indonesian Leather Tanning Association, the Australian Embassy in Indonesia, and a supercomputer from BRIN, showed an accuracy of 81.7% with optimization of 26 cepstral coefficients and 50% overlap.

Although this accuracy can still be improved, this technology already offers a significant solution to the problem of detecting halal leather. “Manual analysis with a stereo microscope often takes a long time, is subjective, and is prone to bias. With AI, the process becomes faster, more accurate, and more objective. Including, when fraud occurs, such as the use of unlabeled pigskin and synthetic products, machine learning technology from AI helps identify species more sensitively and quickly,” said Raafqi.

As a follow-up, LPPOM is preparing an AI-based authentication application that facilitates species testing in ISO17025 accredited laboratories. “We hope that this innovation will become a new standard in ensuring the halal status of products, not only in Indonesia, but also in the global market,” concluded Raafqi.

The presence of LPPOM in WHS 2024 further strengthens LPPOM’s position as a pioneering institution in technology-based halal assurance, with a commitment to maintaining the integrity and trust of the people. This is also emphasized by the achievement of the ISO 17065: 2012 accreditation certificate from the National Accreditation Committee (KAN).

The World Halal Summit (WHS) 2024, which took place on 27-30 November 2024 at the Istanbul Expo Centre, Türkiye, marked the 10th anniversary of success in the global halal industry. Discover Events organized this event in collaboration with the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) and under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye. With the theme “A Decade of Halal Success: Uniting Vision, Shaping the Future”, the summit attracted more than 40,000 participants from 110 countries, including government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and academics. The event featured more than 500 exhibitors showcasing various halal-certified products and services. Mr. İhsan ÖVÜT, Secretary General of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) as moderator. In addition, also present as speakers were Mufti Yousuf A.R. Khan (SANHA Halal Associates, Pakistan), Datuk Seri Mohd Rizal bin Mohd Yusof (Group Executive Chairman, Euro Jasmine Holding Sdn Bhd, Malaysia), Murat Tasarsu (specialist, SMIIC), and Dr. Abdullah Koh Heesong (Secretary General, Halal Advancement Institute of Korea). At this event, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry’s Halal Industry Empowerment Centre (PPIH Kemenperin) was also present to enliven the 2024 Halal Expo. (YN)
