The President Director of LPPOM MUI, Muti Arintawati, opened the 16th edition of the 2023 Indonesian Cosmobeaute Exhibition, held on 12-14 October 2023, at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC). In this exhibition, LPPOM MUI contributed to a “Halal & Sustainable Cosmetics: Synergies and Benefits” seminar on 12 October 2023 at Beauty Seminar 1, Pre-Function Hall A, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC). In addition, visitors can also visit the LPPOM MUI booth (area P16 – P17) to get further information concerning the halal certification process.
“I’m delighted and honored to be present at this important moment. I want to express my deepest appreciation to Pamerindo, especially to PT. Pamerindo Indonesia, for the collaboration that has taken place in the 16th Edition of Cosmobeaute Indonesia 2023. This is the third time LPPOM MUI has collaborated,” explained Muti.
Muti considers Pamerindo a valuable partner who always supports and collaborates to develop halal products. The Cosmobeaute Indonesia event has become one of the leading platforms for promoting halal products in the cosmetics industry.
In welcoming the 2024 halal obligation, LPPOM MUI is always committed to supporting halal certification activities. Maximum service is provided to companies that wish to obtain a halal certificate. Data on LPPOM MUI cosmetics client companies as of July 2023 is 383 companies.
“This is a challenge in itself, with the mandatory halal certification grace period approaching for companies, especially cosmetics; of course, there are many things that companies have to do in fulfilling halal certification requirements,” said Muti.
However, Muti also revealed that LPPOM MUI continues to innovate to answer various requests from companies such as LPPOM MUI clients and the public as consumers of halal products. One of LPPOM MUI’s innovations is vegan testing at the LPPOM MUI Laboratory. This is Indonesia’s first vegan laboratory accredited for food, beverage, supplements, cosmetics, and packaging.
According to him, this innovation stems from the vegan lifestyle, which is becoming a societal trend. The vegan lifestyle initially focused on food has spread to other aspects, like cosmetics. Currently, more body care and beauty products claim to be free from animal ingredients.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that vegan cosmetics are halal. There is a possibility of using auxiliary materials from animals that are not halal or contain unclean substances since there are many opportunities for raw materials originating from animal derivatives and contamination of raw materials for production. Therefore, one way to confirm this is to conduct laboratory tests.
The government also enforces regulations regarding vegan products as stated in BPOM RI regulation No. 31 of 2018 Article 64 concerning Processed Food Labels. This rule says that including a vegan logo or writing on a product must be proven by deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis.
“Vegan testing is crucial to avoid falsifying or fraudulent claims of vegan ingredient sources. Additionally, laboratory testing can be of added value to strengthen the data and ensure that the product is vegan,” said Muti.
The LPPOM MUI efforts also support government programs that aim to make Indonesia a world halal producer. Therefore, LPPOM MUI is committed to contributing and synergizing with all parties in achieving this goal.
