The phrase “Islam” comes from Arabic: al-Islam, which means “surrender (to Allah).” It is a religion that believes in one God in an essential sense,  Allah: “Say:” He is Allah, the One and Indivisible.” (Surah Al-Ikhlaash, 112: 1). The oneness of Allah is also emphasized in Quran: ‘It is truly I. I am Allah! There is no god ?worthy of worship? except Me. Worship Me ?alone?, and establish prayer for My remembrance.” (QS. Thohaa, 20:14). This needs to be emphasized and confirmed since there are also religions which claim to be one / one god, but with several personifications.

Apart from that, literally “Islam” also means peace, safety, submission, and cleanliness. The root word “Islam” itself is formed from three letters, namely S (sin), L (lam), M (mim); then it becomes the original word, and the mashdar (infinitive) form of it Salamah, which means the basis for “peace and / or safety”. This vocabulary has also been adopted in Indonesian as the word, Selamat.

Linguistically, it can be understood that Islam is a religion that brings peace and safety of essential life, in this temporary world, and in the eternal hereafter (the realm of life after death). With this basic understanding, Islam also teaches its people or adherents, the Muslims, to spread peace and safety. In its implementation, this is manifested in a real way, among others, in reading as a closing prayer – the main prayer – namely the prayer of salvation, as well as prayer when meeting others, as a manifestation of peace and social harmony: “Assalamu’alaikum warohmatullah wabarokatuh”, Peace be upon you and God’s mercy and blessings.

To Greet in Islam

In the hadith, Prophet Muhammad mentioned, “Muslim rights to other Muslims are six.” Then someone asked, “What are the six things?” Then he saw. said, “(1) When you meet, greet him, (2) When you are invited, fulfill his invitation, (3) When you are asked for advice, give him advice, (4) When he sneezes and then he praises Allah (say ‘alhamdulillah ‘), pray for him (by saying’ yarhamukallah ‘), (5) When he is sick, visit him, and (6) When he dies, accompany his corpse (until the funeral). ” (HR. Muslim).

Imam Bukhari also mentioned in his Shohih Book, Chapter ‘Saying greetings to people known or unknown’, mentioning the Hadith of the Prophet saw. from ‘Abdullah bin’ Amr that someone asked the Prophet saw: “What is the best Islamic practice?” The Prophet then replied, “Feeding (to the needy) and greeting those you know and to those you do not know.” (HR. Bukhari).

In addition to greeting, it is also recommended to shake hands, as mentioned in the Hadith from Al-Bara ‘bin’ Azib, he said, Rasulullah said, “It is not the two Muslims meet and then shake hands but the sins between the two will be forgiven before parting.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi).

Shaking hands in social interaction not only shows the intimacy of the relationship between individuals, but also a manifestation of the very beautiful harmony of social relationships.

In the Quran, Islam is also called the Religion of Allah or Deenullah, as stated in a verse which means: “So is it other than the religion of Allah they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned?” (Surah Ali Imran, 3: 83). Dien (religion) itself in the Quran means religion (QS. 3:83), obedience (QS. 16:52), and worship (QS. 40:65 ).

Understanding Islam, the teachings that can essentially save mankind from darkness to the brightest of the world’s salvation to enter eternal heaven in the hereafter: “Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer – We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do” (Surah An-Nahl: 97).

This is evidenced by the guidance of Islam which justifies everything that is good, and forbids everything that is bad. Because the good, surely save; while the bad is sure to be harmful. Observe Allah says with the meaning, “Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written [i.e., described] in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and prohibits them from what is wrong and makes lawful for them what is good and forbids them from what is evil and relieves them of their burden1 and the shackles which were upon them.2 So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him – it is those who will be the successful.” (Surah Al-A’raaf: 157).

Furthermore, consuming halal and thoyyib or good food will determine the impact of the world and the hereafter. Especially so that the deeds that are done can be accepted by God. On the other hand, if consumption is not halal, or strictly speaking haram, then his acts of worship will be rejected. There are people who earnestly worship and pray to Allah, but are rejected. There are those who give shodaqoh, pay zakat, not accepted by Allah. There are also those who do the Hajj, but do not get the Hajj that is Mabrur, and even become the Hajj that is Mardud. Narrated from Abu Hurairah, he said: “Has said the Messenger of Allah:” Verily Allah is good, does not accept anything except good (lawful). ” [HR. Muslim].

This is further emphasized in a hadith of the Prophet. which is famous, and is listed in the Hadith Book of Al-Arba’in an-Nawawiyah, with the meaning: “The Prophet. tells of a man who made a long journey, his hair disheveled, and his body covered in dust. As he raised his hands to the sky he prayed, “O my Lord, O my Lord.” While his food is haram, his drinks are haram, his clothes are haram, and he always struggles and is satisfied with what is haram. (So the Prophet also emphasized), then how could he be granted his prayer. ” (Narrated by Imam Muslim).

Consuming Non-Halal means Creating Crimes

Obviously, the impacts and dangers of consuming food that is not halal are numerous, and can be a serious problem. As an example that crime acts very sadistically, because many of the criminals before taking action usually drink illegal liquor first. Strictly speaking, it is forbidden in Islam. As a result, the awareness of reason and feelings is lost. So that they no longer hesitate to be very cruel and sadistic towards their victims.

A person whose unhealthy mind, certainly cannot think normally, cannot decide wisely. Many criminals, before committing a crime, first consume alcohol which is haram. It is also proven that there are so many cases of immoral acts as well as crimes and criminal acts committed, because the perpetrator is drunk, due to the influence of alcohol, or liquor (alcohol). Such as theft, robbery, sexual harassment, and even rape to very heinous and sadistic murders. So it can be said, consuming khamar or alcohol which is prohibited by religion is the starting point of various criminal acts. Even in Europe and America there are laws and regulations that state, a person driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol is considered a criminal act that can be prosecuted by law.

Likewise, many student children do brawl and also act sadistically, to the point of abusing and even killing their fellow students. In the investigation by the authorities, it was proven that before the fight they had first drunk alcohol. Or it is even possible that the students fight in such a way because they consume a lot of food that is not halal. Namely from the family rizki given by his parents which was obtained by illegal means such as from stealing, corruption, manipulation, etc., which was mentioned earlier. Hadith of the Prophet has hinted this emphatically: “Any body that grows from haram food, then the fire of hell is superior to him (it is more worthy to burn it)” (HR. At-Thabrani).

This has also been confirmed in the Hadith narrated from ‘Abdullah bin’ Amr, that the Prophet said: “Khamr is the master of all evil, whoever drinks it, then his prayer is not accepted for 40 days, when he dies while there is khamr in his stomach, then he dies as the Jahiliyyah people die.” (HR. Ath-Thabrani). There is even a narration that mentions, due to khamr an ‘abid (worshiper) commited to adultery and murder.

As narrated from Uthman bin ‘Affan, he stated, “Avoid khamr (liquor), because it is the master of all evils (the source of damage). ‘Uthman then narrated, there used to be a’ abid who used to go to the mosque among the people before you and he was liked by a prostitute. The prostitute sent her maid to deliver the message, “We invite you to a testimony.” The worshiper also went with the assistant. When he arrived and entered the prostitute’s house, the prostitute immediately closed all the doors of her house, and no one else. The servant’s eyes were fixed on the figure of a very beautiful woman (sexy looking with challenging clothes) while carrying a cup of alcohol and nearby a small baby. The woman said, “By God, I did not invite you to a testimony, but I did invite you to make love to me, or to take a glass of alcohol with me, or you must kill this baby.” (If you reject it, then I will shout and shout, ‘someone entered my house.’). Finally the worshiper bent his knees and he said, “Adultery, I do not want. Killing is not. ” Then he chose to drink alcohol (because he considered his sins lighter). He drank one by one until he finally got drunk. And after getting drunk he lost his sanity which in the end he committed adultery with the prostitute and also killed the baby. Then ‘Uthman also said, Therefore stay away from intoxication (alcohol), because for the sake of God, indeed faith can not unite with intoxication in one’s chest, but must come out of one of them. (Narrated by An-Nasa’i, Al-Hafizh Abu Thahir said that the chain of hadith is authentic).

Obviously, from the hadith of the Prophet, it can be understood that people who consume food that is not halal, then it is difficult to be obedient, worship God. On the other hand, it is very easy to commit immorality, a sin that religion forbids. So as a result of the torment in hell.

Being a surrender Muslim, Obey Allah and Worship Him

Admittedly, there is a gap between the ideal Islamic teachings from Allah and definitely save human life, and Muslims who embrace this noble religion. So it should be, people who claim to be Muslim should really surrender, submit to Allah and practice Islamic teachings with full sincerity. Not just a confession, what is popularly called the Islam KTP.

So, if there is a Muslim but (often) commits immorality, even commits corruption or other sin, it means that he or she does not understand the essence of the meaning of the phrase “Islam” itself, as explained above. Namely, among others, Islam means peace and safety. So people who claim to be Muslim must certainly practice this religious teaching with full sincerity. Among other things, do something cool, bring peace and safety to himself, his family and society and the environment. So that it can form a social life that is peaceful, full of harmony. (USM)
